      <description><![CDATA[An internal combustion engine with a conventional transmission is far from the ideal combination for urban transit service.  A forty-foot transit bus needs an engine of eight to ten liters to handle acceleration and hill climbing.  Long periods at idle or low speeds and wide variations in rpm, however, result in wasted fuel and increased pollution.  A smaller engine operating with fewer variations in rpm would be a major step in reducing emissions and achieving greater fuel economy - two goals driving propulsion systems development today.]]></description>

      <title>21ST CENTURY BUSES: WHAT THE EXPERTS ENVISION</title>

      <description><![CDATA[At the APTA Bus Operations and Technology Conference, panelists from bus manufacturers and operators presented their views on where bus technology could be by year 2000.  Many of the presentations addressed emerging developments that could logically lead to a bus that: carries forty seated riders and twenty standing; weighs between 30,000 and 35,000 pounds fully loaded; is fully ADA-compliant; is of a low-floor design but with no pedestal-mounted or rearward facing seats; has an internal combustion engine with far lower emissions than previous engines; drives on natural gas, although it could burn other alternative fuels that meet the emission standards; has its maintenance time reduced by as much as 40%.  This all may sound like a pipe dream, but the panelists drew this collective picture at the conference, and summed up and put in perspective that such radical changes in bus technology can be reached.]]></description>

      <title>CHATTANOOGA: A LABORATORY FOR ELECTRIC BUSES</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Use of small buses as dowtown circulators has become common as cities seek ways to revitalize central business districts and reduce pollution.  In Chattanooga, instead of merely buying a couple of vehicles and setting up a route through downtown, civic leaders have created what they term a "living laboratory' for development of electric transit vehicles.  The Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) first considered and rejected existing, known alternatives, such as vintage rail operation and trolleys.  Eventually, the Electric Transit Vehicle Institute (ETVI) was formed.  ETVI is a private, non-profit organization with the mission of furthering the development and use of electric transit vehicles.  Chattanooga is emerging as a center for research, testing and practical operating experience in this developing field.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[The key elements of the transit marketing mix are product, price, and promotion.  But it takes reseearch and understanding of the market to know how to use them.  Few transit providers in the U.S. do a better job of researching and understanding their markets than does Metra, Chicago's commuter rail system.  Metra is the third largest commuter rail operator in the U.S.  Only Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North in the New York region serve more riders.  A massive amount of Metra customers have been won within the last two decades by exemplary service combined with superb marketing techniques.  The following key points are covered:  understanding the market; doing the necessary research; recognizing importance of pricing; and, implementing the marketing strategy that works.]]></description>
