THE SUPERFICIAL BEHAVIOR OF SLABS IS CHARACTERIZED PRIMARILY BY THE GENERAL BLACKENING OF THE SURFACE, AND THEN BY THE APPEARANCE OF CAVITIES PRODUCED BY FOREIGN BODIES. IT IS ALSO NECESSARY TO NOTE THE WEAR OF REPAIRED AREAS, AS THE MEASURE OF ROUGHNESS IS AN INDICATION OF THE EFFECT OF TRAFFIC AND WEATHER. AT PRESENT THE SAWED LONGITUDINAL JOINT IS ENTIRELY SATISFAC- TORY AND IS PREFERRED TO LAYING THE CARRIAGEWAY IN TWO STRIPS OR THE INSERTION OF PLASTIC JOINTING MATERIAL. BY INCREASING ITS RIGIDITY AND FACILITATING A BETTER DISTRIBUTION OF THE LOADS, IT AFFECTS FLEXURAL STRENGTH WHICH DOES NOT DECREASE SO RAPIDLY. THE TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON A LARGE NUMBER OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF BITUMEN, AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES AND FREQUENCIES WHILE THE STRESS AMPLITUDE REMAINED CONSTANT. FOR A GIVEN TEMPERATURE AND FREQUENCY, THE LOGARITHM OF THE LIFE TIME OF BITUMEN EXPRESSED IN THE NUMBER OF CYCLES IS A DECREASING FUNCTION OF THE LOGARITHM OF RELATIVE DEFORMATION. THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF BITUMENS AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES AND FREQUENCIES IS DESCRIBED BY MEANS OF THE COMPLEX MODULUS AND PENETRATION INDEX OF THE BITUMEN. IT IS THEREFORE POSSIBLE TO QUICKLY DETERMINE THE LIFE TIME OF BITUMEN WITHOUT USING LENGTHY FATIGUE TESTS.
