This book sets out the regulations applicable to signposting diversions in conjunction with roadworks. Details are given of the signs to be used. A large number of examples is given of signposting for various types of roadworks on all kinds of roads. (TRRL)

CHILDREN AND TRAFFIC

Children are in the greatest need of protection in traffic. They cannot express their own views, and adults must therefore speak for them. It is hard for adults to realise how children see and experience traffic, since their experiences when they were children were quite different. Traffic today is vastly different from that even 10 years ago. The report describes how, as part of the traffic training in schools, a class of 11-year-olds carried out a traffic survey near their school and then discussed the problems with the local authority. A description is given of local authority traffic safety work, the growth of vehicular traffic, and the accidents and health problems this has given rise to as regards children and teenagers. The difficulties they experience as pedestrians, cyclists, moped riders and travellers on school buses are described. Examples are given of planning with regard to traffic environment. Problems involved in improving traffic safety, resolving conflicts between pedestrians, traffic and nature conservancy considerations, etc, are discussed. (TRRL)

SPEED-REDUCING DEVICES IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS

The high speed of motor vehicles is a serious problem in many residential areas. According to the Swedish "general guidelines for planning urban traffic networks" speed should not exceed 30 km/h on local streets. This can be done by short driving distances and suitable street design. On local streets providing driving distances greater than 150 M, the 30 km/h reference speed can only be expected if the street is specially designed or aligned. The following three types of speed reducing obstacles for a signposted speed limit of 30 km/h are described in the report: humps with rounded or level upper surfaces, lateral displacement of the carriageway (chicanes), width restriction of the carriageway.
