ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS 1983

This publication contains data on road traffic accidents in Finland in 1983 reported to the Central Statistical Office (CSO) by the police. For fatal accidents the coverage of the statistics is 100 per cent. For other kind of accidents the coverage is lower mainly because the police investigates only part of these accidents. The statistics contain nearly two thirds of accidents causing bodily injury and below a quarter of accidents causing material damage. Since 1978, persons injured only very slightly are no longer recorded as injured in the statistics. In 1983, 604 persons were killed in road traffic accidents, which is 35 persons more than in 1982. The number of the injured was 9373 persons, i.e., 2.8 percent more than in 1982. The number of accidents involving personal injury was 7673 (+3.7%). The number of accidents causing material damage also increased considerably. Accidents involving personal injury increased especially in non-built up areas. More casualties were recorded for all the other categories of road user except pedestrians. The use of seat belts in cars and the use of crash helmets by riders of motorcycles and mopeds increased.
