      <description><![CDATA[RECENT ADVANCES IN TREE MAINTENANCE PRACTICES OF TRANSPLANTING, FERTILIZATION, PRUNING, WOUND DRESSINGS, PESTICIDES, AND TREE DISEASE CONTROL ARE BRIEFLY DISCUSSED. THE PAST FIVE YEARS HAVE WITNESSED MANY IMPROVEMENTS ON LARGE TREE-MOVING EQUIPMENT, INCLUDING A SELF-PROPELLED, TRUCK-MOUNTED MACHINE WHICH CAN DIG, TRANSPORT, AND PLANT TREES UP TO SEVEN OR EIGHT INCHES DBH (DIAMETER AT BREAST HEIGHT).  A METHOD FOR ESTIMATING FERTILIZER REQUIREMENTS BASED ON THE ROOT AREA INVOLVED RATHER THAN ON THE TREE'S DBH HAS BEEN PROPOSED.  THE HIGH COST OF MANUAL TREE PRUNING HAS LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHEMICAL PRUNING MATERIALS WHICH INHIBIT THE DIVISION OF CELLS.  THE POSSIBILITY OF CONTROLLING DUTCH ELM DISEASE AND OTHER VASCULAR DISEASE BY TRUCK INJECTIONS IS NOW BEING WIDELY INVESTIGATED. /DOT/]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[A STUDY OF AIRPORT STORM RUNOFF CHARACTERISTICS WAS CONDUCTED AT MONTREAL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, QUEBEC, CANADA, TO IDENTIFY THE POLLUTIONAL EFFECTS OF AIRCRAFT DEICERS ON AIRPORT STORM RUNOFF.  THE STUDY INCLUDED MEASUREMENT OF STORMWATER FLOWS AND DETERMINATION OF DAILY BIOCHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND, CHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND, AND GLYCOL ANALYSES OF COMPOSITE SAMPLES TAKEN FROM THE AIRPORT STORMWATER SYSTEM.  THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY INDICATED AN ORGANIC LOADING RATIO OF STORM TO SEWER WASTE OF 4:1 DURING WINTER MONTHS.  AIRCRAFT DEICERS WERE IDENTIFIED AS THE MAJOR POLLUTANT IN APRON STORM RUNOFF DURING THESE MONTHS.  /DOT/]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[STUDIES OF THE CONDITION OF TREES ALONG CURBS AND IN MEDIANS OF STREETS IN WILMINGTON, N. C., SHOWED THAT NATURAL GAS WAS LEAKING INTO THE SOIL. THIS GAS DISPLACES THE SOIL AIR TO SOME EXTENT AND PROVIDES AN ENVIRONMENT SUITABLE FOR NATURAL GAS UTILIZING BACTERIA. UNDER ANAEROBIC SOIL CONDITIONS MICROORGANISMS TRANSFORM SULFATES TO HYDROGEN SULFIDE. HYDROGEN SULFIDE INTERFERES WITH ROOT RESPIRATION AND NUTRIENT UPTAKE WITH THE ULTIMATE RESULT BEING THE DEATH OF THOSE WOODY PLANTS GROWING IN THE SOIL. NITROUS OXIDE IS ALSO PRODUCED UNDER ANAEROBIC CONDITIONS AND MAY BE AN ADDITIONAL STRESS FACTOR. /DOT/]]></description>

THE DEGREE OF UNIFORMITY ACHIEVED BY THE SEEDLING SELECTION PROCESS IS NOT GREAT. THE TYPE OF UNIFORMITY NEEDED IN THE TREES IS IN RESISTANCE TO MAJOR INSECT AND DISEASE PESTS AND TOLERANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS FACTORS. VEGETATIVE PROPAGATION OF SELECTED CULTIVARS BY GRAFTING, BUDDING, OR ROOTING RESULTS IN A POPULATION WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF UNIFORMITY, EVEN THOUGH VARIABLE SEEDLING MATERIAL IS FREQUENTLY USED AS UNDERSTOCK.
