IMPACT OF INNOVATION ON THE SUPPLY OF FREIGHT TRANSPORT

Improvements in freight transport services will come less from the application of novel techniques (except perhaps for the application of material-flow methods to urban goods traffic) than from adapting the techniques and organization of existing sub-systems. In sea transport the size of ships will increase particularly for bulk transport, and the limiting factor will be the cost of infrastructural adaptation to harbors and their approaches. The cost of adapting ports to receive bigger ships will lead to greater concentration in the use of a small number of ports for certain goods. The importance of mixed goods transport will increase. the organization of the freight transport system will lead to increased use of electronic data processing equipment.
