      <title>State rail quarries: the not so rocky road</title>

      <description><![CDATA[State Rail currently owns and operates three blue metal quarries. The largest quarry is situated at Bombo (South of Wollongong), then Martins Creek (North of Maitland) and Ardglen (between Muswellbrook and Tamworth). Recent annual production from these quarries has reached 500 1 0.00 tonnes of ballast from Bombo, 260,000 tonnes from Martins Creek. and 260,000 tonnes from Ardglen. In addition to ballast output, an inevitable by-product is produced which is equivalent to a further fifty percent on the above figures. That is, for every two tonne of ballast produced, one tonne of 20mm minus by-product is also produced. These three quarries now supply material north towards Grafton, north west to North Star and Glen Innes, west to Bathurst and south to the Goulburn region. The parameters determining the extent of the ballast distribution include; alternative supply costs, freight costs and ballast train logistics.]]></description>

The Project Team managing and implementing the design services consisted of New MetroRail, Maunsell Australia and Sinclair Knight Merz. The Joint Venture Design Team, Maunsell - Sinclair Knight Merz, was comprised of more than 100 staff including several staff members from New MetroRai| and drew specialist design resources from a further 6 engineering companies. In total, the Joint Venture Design Team expended over 36 man years of works during the 9 month design period.]]></description>

      <title>Hong Kong West rail</title>

      <description><![CDATA[In 1998 Rail Services Australia and Leighton Contractors Asia formed a joint venture combining RSA’s railway specific skills and experience with Leighton’s civil construction expertise and local knowledge of the Hong Kong Construction Industry. In July 1999 the Leighton RSA Joint Venture (LRSA JV) was selected as preferred tenderer for the HK$750 million West Rail Permanent Way, Southern Section Project, Contract No. CC1810. The Contract was awarded in August of that year, with site access not available for a further year when the interfacing Civil Contractors completed their tunnelling and depot earth works. This paper will provide an overview of the West Rail Project, and details of the CC1810 Project.]]></description>

      <title>Mechanised track patrol</title>

      <description><![CDATA[In September 2001, the Rail Infrastructure Corporation (RIC) began an innovation project that centered on utilising the latest imaging technology as an alternative to track patrols on foot. The potential was emerging for the new technology to meet on-foot track patrol requirements and to reduce safety risks to staff in line with RIC safety policy. From initial RIC investigations, mechanised track patrol systems were being investigated and implemented on overseas rail networks in such countries as the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Singapore, Taiwan and England. Today, the prototype Mechanised Track Patrol at RIC is entering the safety validationprocess at RIC prior to becoming an official RIC maintenance system. The prototype Mechanised Track Patrol system follows a 2 year technology and business process development and validation process. The RIC Mechanised Track Patrol system utilises two distinct image technology systems, the Benntec Railcheck system and the Geomatic Technologies AIM system. This paper discusses briefly the technology behind Mechanised Track Patrol and then presents the outcomes of the Mechanised Track Patrol trial with a summary of the benefits and limitations of Mechanised Track patrol.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[During 2003, the Projects & Support Division project managed the installation of 40,000 medium duty concrete sleepers on curves on a 1:4 pattern over a 120km section of the Main Southern line between Breadalbane and Galong as part of the annual Country South Major Periodic Maintenance program. As this is the first known major partial installation of concrete sleepers in N.S.W, this discussion paper summarises the preconstruction planning, innovation and installation process used to successfully deliver the objectives of the project. The paper also overviews R|C's sleeper renewal strategy, project objectives and the benefits resulting from using medium duty concrete sleepers.]]></description>

      <title>Parramatta rail link: the project, civil contract and its approach to controlling train generated noise and vibration</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The Parramatta. Rail Link project is the largest new infrastructure project in the New South Wales rail system since the construction of the East Hills line in the 1920's. The project has been developed and sponsored by the NSW Government, and is the largest publicly funded infrastructure project and among the most significant works currently being progressed in Australia. The main contract for the works between Epping to Chatswood, which will be fully integrated with the Sydney metropolitan system, was let to the Thiess Hochtief Joint Venture on 61“ July 2002. Work commenced on the contract on 25"‘ November 2002. Work is to be completed to allow the commencement of Revenue Service by mid 2008. In addition to the general issues in the project we have chosen to discuss one specific area of interest, in which we believe there is innovation - the stringent noise and vibration criteria that the railway must meet and the systems developed to ensure compliance.]]></description>

      <title>Alice Springs to Darwin railway construction track structure and design considerations</title>

      <description><![CDATA[In 1977, as a relatively young engineer with Westrail, I was asked/told to go and see the construction operation of the Tarcoola to Alice Springs railway, as it utilised gantries and may have been relevant to the proposed upgrading of track between Koolyanobbing and Kwinana. At the time it was hoped that Australian National would be given a mandate to continue onto Darwin. This of course did not happen. In 1986, in another life I was part of the team which made a submission to the group who were established by the Northern Territory Government to construct the railway. This attempt was the one to get it done or it would not happen in our lifetime. Paul Tyrell was on that committee and also headed the one which has just signed off the project. On 20/21 April, an agreement was signed between Asia Pacific Corporation and Asia Pacific Transport Pty Ltd to construct the railway from Alice Springs to Darwin. I am sure that our forefathers who gave an undertaking at, or near, Federation would not have contemplated the legal and financial complexity of the arrangements finally signed off in 2001. There are something like 180 linked documents, which of course, offers endless scope for "assistance" from bankers, lawyers, bureaucrats and all those whose physical contribution is measured by document weight and the right to "monitor". There were 1,136 transactions at financial close with documentation being too much for any single room. Similarly, if you look at the final structure of the organisation to build, own, operate and transfer this project, the complexity can again be somewhat overwhelming. However, let us remove some of the veils adding to the mystic and justifying the documentation and bare the essence of the project.]]></description>

      <title>Permanent way experiences in Hong Kong</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The project referenced in this paper is the design, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning of the permanent way system aspects of the WestRail Project in Hong Kong by Leightonl25A Joint Venture (LRSAJV) for the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC). KCRC's WestRail Project is a new passenger railway line joining urban Kowloon with the Northwest New Territories of Hong Kong. The line is 30.3 route km of electrified standard gauge double track, consisting of 13.8km underground, 3.0km at-grade, and 13.5km elevated. A depot of about 17km of at-grade track is included. LRSAJV is a joint venture between Leighton Contractors (Asia) and Rail Services Australia (RSA). Leighton Contractors (Asia) provided the majority of the project team, with RSA providing railway specialist staff. This included the Project Manager, Technical Manager, Construction Manager, Track Supervisor, and Surfacing Foreman.]]></description>

      <title>North west floods</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Between November 2000 and March 2001 there were major floods in the north west of NSW which affected raiI services. Tracks were closed for weeks. Grain crops were ruined.  Permanent way staff were drenched and marooned. There were two derailments but fortunately no one was injured. As always there was a brilliant restoration effort and a few lessons learnt for the next big rains.]]></description>
