LOS ANGELES HARBOR AND LONG BEACH HARBOR: DESIGN OF THE HYDRAULIC MODEL

This paper describes the design of a hydraulic model and related equipment constructed to experimentally investigate the effects of proposed expansions of Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors. In order to insure proper reproduction of waves in the model, it was necessary to conduct an extensive study of: wave refraction for wave periods of 15 sec to 6 min; energy transmission through the breakwaters; diffraction through the harbor entrances; reflection from the offshore topography and from harbor boundaries; wave filters and absorbers; model wave-height attenuation; wave generators; and model data acquisition and analyses.

DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF ELEVATED CONVEYOR STRUCTURES

A review of the literature is presented on the subject of wind pressures and related dynamic responses of structures. The literature includes ideas and recommendations derived from highly sophisticated analytical and experimental investigations and those resulting from common engineering judgement.

SOFT MOORING SYSTEMS AT EXPOSED TERMINALS

This paper describes a soft mooring system developed for an exposed tanker terminal proposed on the Bay of Fundy in Eastern Canada. The response of moored ships to both waves and wave groups and low energy portions of wave spectra is discussed. Natural periods of ship motions for various mooring configurations are compared to the periods of the waves, swell and wave groups. Analytic and model test results showing the decrease in mooring forces with the increase in system flexibility are presented.
