HOW CAN BUSES BE MADE SAFER AGAINST FIRE HAZARDS?

A brief summary is given of a meeting where invited representatives from transport authorities and other people concerned with passenger transport were informed about scania's products and efforts to improve safety in buses. Problems discussed were: warning devices for overheated bearings and brake drums, the need for hub caps, upholstery materials and the development of toxic gases, information pamphlet about emergency routines such as those used in airplanes and new types of emergency exits. /TRRL/

THIS IS THE WAY SCANIA LOOKS UPON SAFETY IN BUSES

A representative of scania - a Swedish manufacturer of buses - outlines present safety regulations and discusses the most urgent improvements needed. Fire retardant upholstery, measures against toxic gases developed by fire, new types of emergency exits, safety belts for seats in exposed positions, and increased emergency training for drivers, are examples of possible improvements. Examples are also given of safety measures of more doubtful value. In some cases they may even have the opposite effect if the whole complex safety problem has not been taken into consideration. The need for international collaboration and standardization is pointed out. /TRRL/
