      <description><![CDATA[THE ENGINEERING PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH MUSKEG ARE DISCUSSED. THE FORMS OF DISCRETE PORTIONS OF ORGANIC MATTER ARE TERMED GRANULES AND FIBRES. THE ARRANGEMENT OR DISTRIBUTION OF GRANULES AND/OR FIBRES IN PEAT IS TERMED MATRIX. THE VARYING DRY STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS OF PART SUGGEST THAT THE RATE OF DRIED SAMPLE DISINTEGRATION DUE TO SIEVE SHAKING BE UTILIZED AS A MEASURE OF THE MATRIX CHARACTERISTICS. AN EMPIRICAL METHOD OF MECHANICAL SEPARATION OF DRIED ORGANIC MATERIAL IS PRESENTED, USING SLIT SCREENS AND VARIOUS SHAKING INTERVALS. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE RATE OF DRIED ORGANIC MATTER DISINTEGRATION IN A SIEVE SHAKER AND THE SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF THE RESULTING COMPONENTS ARE CHARACTERISTICS THAT MAY BE UTILIZED TO QUANTITATIVELY DESCRIBED AND CLASSIFY ORGANIC MATERIALS.]]></description>
