VENTILATION IN THE CARGO SPACES OF RO-RO SHIPS--THE SOLUTION DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED BY FLAKT (AB SVENSKA FLAKTFABRIKEN)

Detailed information on exhaust gas emissions from petrol and Diesel engines is first presented, with particular reference to the gases emitted by vehicles in the cargo spaces of roll-on/roll-off ships of all types. The information includes data on the composition of the gases and on the concentrations which, in the interests of personnel working in the spaces, should not be exceeded. Information on some relevant calculation procedures is also included. Order from BSRA as No. 52,548.

CONSIDERATIONS ON HABITABILITY FOR CREWS ABOARD MERCHANT SHIPS

Crews of Italian ships deserve better accommodation and amenities than those generally provided for them. The Author contrasts this state of affairs with conditions in the merchant fleets of other countries, in particular the USA, but considers that, because of antiquated legislation and insufficient study of the problem in Italy, it would be a waste of time to draw up a list of the improvements required in Italian ships. Instead, he presents some drawings of Australian and American cabin designs in the hope that they will encourage effective action on the part of the Italian authorities and organisations concerned. Initially, a study centre devoted to the problem might be required, together with arrangements for promoting, co-ordinating, and financing research. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,275.
