POWER FACTOR AND HIGHER HARMONIC CURRENTS OF THE ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEM FOR A HIGH POWER THREE PHASE AC ELECTRIFIED AUTOMATED GUIDEWAY TRANSIT

In three phase ac electrified Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) systems, the car uses a thyistor phase control type controller. The controller of this type has a low power factor, and it generates higher harmonic currents to the power line. A simulator has been developed to calculate electric power and higher harmonic currents in a multi-vehicle power feed system. Simulations for the Osaka-Nanko Port Town AGT system show the average power factor is less than 0.7 and harmonic currents exceed the limits with no countermeasures. After several simulations, the power feed system was developed which uses a 5th higher harmonic filter of 250 k VA at all seven feeder substations and 7th 11th and 13th harmonic filters, which total 1.0 MVA, at the receiving substation.

HARD ALLOY ALUMINUM IN CONTACT WIRES - AN ENGINEERING FEASIBILITY STUDY

A study prompted by recent advances in wear performance is in progress to evaluate the ramifications of using hard alloy aluminum in contact wires and its effects on the remainder of the catenary system. Physical properties and their effects on system design are discussed. For purposes of comparison, design criteria were selected for a 25 kV, 600 A catenary. Under these conditions, a baseline system, using hard drawn copper contact wire with ACSR messenger was compared to several equivalent aluminum catenaries. An optimization study was done on both systems, which uses a computer program to assess the interaction between span and tension lengths, and to estimate in-place costs for the most economical combination.
