STUDIES CONCERNING PUBLIC ROAD NETWORKS VIRTUAL TRAFFIC MODELLATION FOR ANALYSING ROAD WORKING DESIGNS

The road design and road signals and traffic regulations theoretically provide the necessary conditions for traffic safety. However, it is necessary to perform a continuous analysis of the qualitative conformity of each element of the road, the vehicle, and the road user, the driver. to recognize and improve the virtual traffic safety, even in situations in which the above elements do not meet the ideal traffic prescriptions. This paper provides the description of the intrinsic working quality of the road virtual safety, in any spot or homogenous sector through a significant and substantial quality indicator.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF GEOSYNTHETIC MATERIALS FOR THE ROAD WORKS AND THEIR USE IN ROMANIA

The paper describes the production and manufacture of the following geosynthetic materials in Romania: geotextiles, geomembranes, prefacbricated parts for draining and geogrids. Four types of geotextiles are identified: netesin and terasin (from recovered synthetic threads); madril (original use of synthetic threads), and tifon (for embankment protection). Geomembranes produced have widths between 1-2 meters (3-6 ft), and thicknesses 0.1-2 mm (.004-.08 in); and the two types of prefabricated draining parts are 0.3-2 cm (.12-.8 in) thick and 2 cm to 1 m (.8 in to .3 ft) wide. These geosynthetic materials are widely used in Romanian road projects.

A WELL ORGANIZED DAMAGE COLLECTING SYSTEM AND BRIDGE AGE BEHAVIOR ASSESSMENT METHODS - THE BASE GROUND FOR THE FINNISH BRIDGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT

An overview of basic elements of a bridge management system is given in this paper. An inspection and damage collecting and documenting system for the BMS use is described in some detail. This inspection system consists of damage classification for every bridge structural member linked together with recommended repair procedures. One table with the damage class main table is shown as an example. Some non-destructive methods for bridge age behavior assessment, especially experimentations with the ground penetrating radar are described. Research on finding out if radar measurements could be used when analyzing deterioration in bridge decks has been initiated. Results from four bridges are encouraging in view of new measurements. Also, the utilization is collected and calculated data for a bridge management system is discussed.

This paper presents AgipPetroli's research activities on the field of modified bituminous products for the development of new pavement maintenance techniques and the improvement of road network. Quality of bitumens that oil companies make currently available on the market is suitable to guarantee the standard use of bituminous products for road pavement. AgipPetroli Research Laboratory, through the evaluation of chemical composition and physical characteristics of bitumens and polymers, has developed a range of modified bitumens which can be utilized in different field applications. A particular emphasis has been focused on the problem of stability of polymer modified bitumens in order to assure a great flexibility on the use if this product.

The application of porous asphalt started in the Netherlands in the early seventies because of the expected advantage of improved safety. The most important incentive for the use of porous asphalt was legislation concerning noise control. Another chief advantage is the reduction of congestion in wet weather conditions. The paper discusses the identified advantages and disadvantages of porous asphalt. Specific emphasis is based on the availability of effective maintenance techniques and methods to extend the service life of the porous asphalt.

Asphalt mixtures can be reinforced with different materials in order to increase their tensile strength. Reinforced asphalt layers in road surfaces have been used in Romania since 1978; knotted polyamid fibers have been used for this purpose. Experiments have been made on 2500 square meter surfaces on bituminous surfaced roads and split bituminous surfaces, over cement and concrete surfaces. Results of these experiments fully justify the additional extra investments required for polyamid reinforcement.

SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF REHABILITATION OF ROADS IN MACEDONIA

Since 1985, about 255 km (153 mi) main roads have been rehabilitated in Macedonia. The approach to this problem was complex with regard to the estimation of existing road condition, its usability and bearing capacity of the pavement construction, selection of the most suitable materials for new overlay layers as well as a selection of most suitable asphalt mixes, taking into consideration Macedonian climate and traffic. Together with the working design, designs for the renovation of structures were made, as well as for renovation of drainage system, traffic signalization and general improvement of the road safety. At certain sections, like in the mountains, lanes for slow vehicles, or so called "third lanes" were constructed. With regard to quality control, a specific relationship was set among contractor, employer and the professional supervisory institutions, all with intention for improvement of quality.

In the consideration of special features of forming recycled asphalt structures, it has been determined that decreasing friction between milling aggregates during compacting them and restoring bitumen adhesive characteristics on the aggregate surfaces is possible through introduction of special plastifiers such as Renobit, that has been developed in Russia, into milling material. The process of asphalt structure formation by using plastifiers required much time and depends on diffusing it into bitumen fills surrounding the aggregates. Also, it has been discovered that plastifiered asphalt has capacity to cure fatigue damages spontaneously.

Among the pavement maintenance techniques used in Hungary, surface dressings and localized repairs should become more widespread. Therefore, it may be worthwhile to use a single machine capable of performing whichever operation is necessary. This paper describes a machine specially designed and manufactured for this purpose by a French contractor and selected by Hungarian authorities. It is a multi-purpose spreader, its chassis being equipped with an ampliroll and five parts, some of which are removable. The first machine of this type was introduced in Hungary in 1990 and purchase of several other machines is now contemplated.
