HIGHWAY AIR QUALITY ASSESSMENT: A CASE HISTORY -- THE WATTERSON EXPRESSWAY

This paper discusses the results of an air quality impact assessment of proposed modifications to the Watterson Expressway in Louisville, Kentucky. This assessment includes an evaluation of historical meteorological and air quality data. The methodology consists of both a mesoscale and a microscale model analysis of the current air pollution problem and the relative impact from proposed improvements. The mesoscale analysis provides information on area wide emissions and background carbon monoxide levels. The microscale analysis provides information on carbon monoxide concentrations due to the Watterson, crossing arterials, a nearby airport and two shopping malls.
