This article, originally written five years ago, has been reprinted because of its increased relevance to current fuel shortages. It contains suggestions for fuel conservation for both engine-powered and electric lift trucks. Recommendations are given for maintaining engine-powered equipment and the importance of employing trained maintenance personnel and skilled drivers is stressed. The author comments on wastage caused by repeated engine starts, excessive idling and jockeying into position, by faster driving than necessary, poor route planning and improper application. He also emphasises the need for proper maintenance of electric vehicles, in particular the battery, hydraulic system and tyres. The article closes with notes on equipment replacement.

A consignment of packaged frozen meat is traced from its point of loading in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia to its unloading at the Frigoscandia cold store at Stratford London. The author describes the preparation and processing of the reefer container used. This covers its steam cleaning at the OCL depot at Chullora, its loading at the cold store and transfer to the White Bay container terminal at Sydney where it was stowed on the Hapag Lloyd vessel, Melbourne Express. The account is resumed in London with the arrival of the vessel at Tilbury and the container's subsequent transfer to Stratford. The article includes details of the processes involved at the cold stores and methods of maintaining the consignment at a constant temperature at each stage of the voyage.
