STATISTICAL STUDIES ON DYNAMIC ZONES OF PROTECTION DURING HORIZONTAL EVASIVE MANEUVERS

The report deals with theoretical studies and arithmetical simulations in the field of dynamic zones of protection during horizontal evasive maneuvers for avoiding midair collisions. The airborne navigation system consists of a VOR/DME receiving equipment and a simple RNAV unit. During a flight on a VOR radial the pilot is requested by a controller to make a track leg change to an impromptu waypoint as soon as a selected distance will be indicated on the DME instrument. The zones of protection at the end of the evasive turn and during the flight to the waypoint are symbolized by means of 95 per cent ellipses. The influences of the VOR/DME errors, the flight technical errors and the evironmental conditions on the position, the shape and the size of the ellipses are investigated analytically.

SUPERPOSITION OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL ERROR FIELDS AND ITS INFLUENCE ON FLIGHT SAFETY OF AIR TRAFFIC

This report deals with theoretical studies concerning the superposition of two-dimensional error fields and its influence on the safety of air traffic. Local error fields being significant with respect to flight safety and their description by means of error ellipses, 95 per cent circles, and some other curves representing the same probability are studied. It is shown which conclusions can be drawn from the frequency distribution of asymmetrical real phenomena. Also treated are the statistical laws for the determination of the mean error vector and the covariance matrix of the superimposed field from the corresponding values of the original, normally distributed error fields. Some rules are given for the shape and the area of error contours of the superposition.

COLOR AND VISIBILITY

The influence of various psychophysical colors of self-luminous objects (obstacle and hazard beacon) and non-self-luminous objects (aircraft, cable marker) on their visibility has been investigated. Based on extended studies of literature, results are given of physiological-optical laboratory tests, statements of which are important for the relation between color and visibility.

SOME IMPORTANT RESULTS OBTAINED DURING THE ANALYSIS OF NEAR MIDAIR AND MIDAIR COLLISIONS

The report deals with theoretical studies concerning the analysis of near midair and midair collisions under visual meteorological conditions. The applicability of the rules of the air for pilots approaching a powered glider or flying in the critical area between converging courses and overtaking is studied. The effectiveness of horizontal evasive manoeuvres in this area is examined using some examples. Retrictions on a pilot's ability to see an approaching aircraft caused by meteorological phenomena, too small dimensions of the aircraft, the workload of the observing pilot, and by opaque structures in his cockpit are discussed.

TRANSPORTATION SECURITY: LITERATURE SURVEY

Results of a literature search covering crime and transportation are presented as a preliminary bibliography. Modal aspects within transportation are accommodated by classifying data within the following sections: (1) Crime and Security; (2) Transportation; (3) Air Transport (Freight); (4) Air Piracy; (5) Motor Transport; (6) Rail Transport; (7) Urban Transport; (8) Water Transport; (9) Appendices. The specially designed classification scheme permits intermodal approaches to specialized problems.
