THE BUREAU VERITAS NOISE DOSIMETERS

A noise-measuring device, developed by Bureau Veritas for the accurate evaluation of noise levels in accommodation and working spaces is described. The device has proved very successful and is now available on the market, being manufactured under licence. The scale of measurement is based on the AFNOR noise standards NF S 31010 and 31013. The unit is supplied as an integrated module and summation of the electrical signals is carried out by means of an electrolytic integrator, giving an indirect reading which is capable of being plotted within four seconds. Order from: BSRA as 49,088.

This article outlines, for welded structures, the process of failure for various types of welded joint, followed by discussion of the influence of certain technological and mechanical parameters on welded-joint fatigue strength. It then demonstrates that weld fatigue characteristics can be improved by certain heat treatments or mechanical treatments.

PROBLEMS OF MODELLING THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF LAMINATED COMPOSITE MATERIALS

The non-homogeneous laminated composite material -- an assembly of oriented laminae composed of fibers in a matrix -- is normally represented as a "Numerically Equivalent Homogeneous Anisotropic Material" (NEHAM). The appropriate modelling gives rise to several problems which are considered in the present paper. This discussion is followed by the presentation of numerical results (bending of a quarter of a torus) obtained by means of a programme, developed in the LMS (Laboratoire de Mecanique des Solides), corresponding to a simple model: elastic, anisotropic thin shell. Finally, tests on thin tubes devised for a direct experimental identification of the elastic moduli involved in this modelling of the laminate are described.

DRIVING DREDGER BUCKET CHAINS: CONTRIBUTION TO THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY

Despite its somewhat primitive appearance, the bucket dredger continues to be used to maintain and deepen canals and harbors, and to mine ore-bearing alluvial deposits. Its main advantage is that it can be adapted (if necessary by changing the type of bucket) to any kind of seabed, from mud to hard limestone, or compact sand and stones. The chain formed by the buckets and intervening links is extremely strong, and on certain dredgers it can exert forces of up to a hundred tons. Experience has shown that the geometrical form of the bucket chain and its driving prism causes wide variations in the necessary torque and power, although even specialized technical literature has little to say on the matter. Therefore, two self- propelled 800-liter bucket dredgers were therefore constructed and a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of the movements of the dredger bucket chains was carried out. Results are summarized in this article.

Two theses on the strength of constructional steel are summarized. The first, by Marc Paris, is on the fatigue behavior of constructional steels at low temperature and studies the validity of existing criteria for selecting steels subjected to cyclic stresses. The second, by Mongi Zehri, deals with fatigue damage to marine structures. After analyzing existing methods for predicting the lifespans of structures, the thesis presents a new random loading damage model and recommends its use.

Thermal balance and thermal comfort are explained. An existing standard for methods of measuring and evaluating the kind of moderate thermal environment to which human beings are exposed is next considered. The final section gives guidance for gathering data on a thermal environment and analyzing the results. Examples of applications are given.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR LINE-SHAFTING ALIGNMENT

Technical assistance with line-shafting alignment by Bureau Veritas began in the early 1960's, following repeated accidents affecting line shafting in the new generation of ships that came into existence at that time. All types of large vessels and all parts of the shafting, including stern posts, speed-reduction gears and diesel engine crankshafts, were involved. This article describes four typical examples of technical assistance with problems of alignment. The first concerned finding the cause for rapid wear in the linings of line-shaft bearings. The second involved damage to a sternpost bushing during sea trials. The third involved the design and installation of a wooden bearing to control strong vibrations, and the last concerned alignment studies using the Grim Wheel system. The article is illustrated with more than 20 drawings, charts and photos.

Vibration problems peculiar to tankers are discussed in detail. They are the result of the size of the hull girder, poor block coefficient and the liquid nature of the load. Hull girder vibrations are first examined, followed by a discussion of aft part vibrations and, lastly, local vibrations. The causes of each of these types are enumerated. Recommendations are offered for reducing or preventing vibration and consequent damage. The article is illustrated with 15 charts and drawings.

Formerly, machinery maintenance was provided by systematic preventive methods, the frequencies of which were based on the stipulations of manufacturers. Methodological advances have led to the development of predictive conditional maintenance, one aspect of which involves periodic analyses of lubricating and hydraulic oils to monitor mechanical wear. A description of such analyses, as performed by Bureau Veritas, is given. Some authorities claim that regular analyses can reduce conventional servicing costs by 5 to 8 per cent.

The laboratory of the Marine Branch of Bureau Veritas provides marine fuel and lubricant analyses for various clients, particularly shipowners. For fuels, the analyses determine product properties so that the fuel can be used to best advantage and operational irregularities avoided. For lubricants, they measure the remaining lubricating capacity of the oil in use and measure its contamination to assess parts wear. The purpose of this article is to explain how the service operates, how it was set up, and how it has developed after several years' experience.
