      <title>QUALITY EVALUATION OF ASPHALT MIXES AND ASPHALT PAVEMENTS IN HUNGARY</title>

      <description><![CDATA[During the last decade, since 1985, a complex asphalt mechanical test series has been developed in laboratories in Hungary. It has been extended to over one hundred asphalt mixes, mainly binder and wearing course materials, qualified from the aspects of expectable advantages and disadvantages. This method has also been applied to classify road building values, qualities of various normal and modified bitumen. Investigations are expected to evaluate asphalt materials -- in particular, bitumen -- under three main aspects. First, two mechanical tests are made concerning resistance to deformation, or proneness to rutting strength and coefficient of expansion of the given asphalt material are made for assessing winter cold behavior, data permitting to conclude on the temperaature of cracking rather instructive for winter cold behavior. Lastly, provided a stricter test is specified (e.g., for motorways), fatigue behavior of the given asphalt at a moderate mean temperature is investigated.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[At present, in Europe the members of the European Bitumen Association (Eurobitume) are heavily involved in the current work of CEN TC 19 SC 1 as representatives of the national standards bodies or as observers. The goal of this work is to achieve a set of standards applicable across Europe for bituminous products. Eurobitume strongly supports this CEN process as the best means of achieving technical harmonization in the shortest possible time. The comments here relate to bitumen only. The objective here is to make certain that the bitumen industry manufactures products which are suitable for the purpose being considered and furthermore that any tests and test methods used by the industry and the customer should be simple, easily reproducible, commercially practical and should not exclude products which are suitable for the purpose being considered.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Compaction of asphalt is a difficult process. In this article the author presents results of extensive research work in the language of the trainers and teachers for roller operators and foremen. How well and how long a properly designed asphalt pavement lasts depends on the composition of the mix and the correct compaction. The correct job mix formula must be kept to conform to the approved regulations. Only sufficiently compacted bases and surface courses made of asphalt concrete are able to resist the various kinds of wear through traffic, weather, winter-maintenance and environmental effects.]]></description>
