SPEED AND ROAD ACCIDENTS UPDATE (1994-1998)

This issue of Current Topics includes over 70 abstracts of reports, conference papers, books and journal articles on the relationship between driving speed and road accidents. Specific topics covered include the characteristics of speeding drivers; drivers' choice of speed; the use of simulation, questionnaires and interviews with drivers; the effectiveness of various deterrent and intervention measures, such as the use of speed cameras, speed limiters, advisory speed limits on bends, appropriate road design, the use of 20 mph zones and traffic calming measures in urban areas, and the effectiveness of public awareness campaigns. These items have been selected from the material added to the Transport Research Laboratory's Library Database between 1994 and 1998. Much of the relevant English language published literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Road Research Documentation (IRRD) database.
