      <title>WET ROAD SKIDDING RESISTANCE AT HIGH SPEEDS ON A VARIETY OF SURFACES ON A1</title>

      <description><![CDATA[FOR A WET ROAD TO HAVE A GOOD SKIDDING RESISTANCE AT HIGH SPEEDS, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE ASPERITIES ON ITS SURFACE SHOULD BE SUFFICIENTLY LARGE AND ANGULAR. THE EXTENT TO WHICH THIS REQUIREMENT IS MET IN PRACTICE HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED IN A SURVEY OF SKIDDING RESISTANCE AND SURFACE TEXTURE ON A SELECTION OF SURFACES ON PART OF THE A1 IN HUNTINGDONSHIRE WHICH CARRIES FAST TRAFFIC; THESE SURFACES COVERED A WIDE RANGE OF MATERIALS AND TEXTURES. FROM MEASUREMENTS OF BRAKING FORCE COEFFICIENTS AND SPEEDS UP TO 80 M.P.H. AND ANALYSES OF SURFACE PROFILES RECORDED BY STERO-PHOTOGRAPHY, IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED THAT THE DECREASE IN COEFFICIENT WITH SPEED DEPENDS ON COARSENESS AND SHAPE OF TEXTURE. ON THIS PARTICULAR ROAD SURFACE DRESSINGS, ASPHALTS WITH A HEAVY RATE OF SPREAD OF CHIPPINGS, AND AN OPEN-TEXTURED MACADAM HAVE MET THE REQUIREMENTS CONCERNING TEXTURE. THE MEASUREMENTS ON A1 TOGETHER WITH ADDITIONAL MEASUREMENTS OF BRAKING FORCE COEFFIEIENT ON OTHER HIGH SPEED ROADS, SUGGEST THAT THERE IS LITTLE DIFFICULTY IN OBTAINING THE SUGGESTED MINIMUM BRAKING FORCE COEFFICIENTS OF 0.4 AT 30 M.P.H. AND 0.3 AT 80 M.P.H. IN THE FAST LANE OF MOTORWAYS AND FAST CARRIAGEWAYS; BUT IN THE SLOW LANES WHICH CARRY MUCH HEAVIER TRAFFIC THERE ARE CLEARLY LIKELY TO BE PROBLEMS BOTH OF POLISHING OF THE SURFACE, WHICH REDUCES THE 30 M.P.H. VALUE, AND OF CLOSING-UP OF THE SURFACE., WHICH REDUCES THE 80 M.P.H. VALUE. /AUTHOR/]]></description>
