TRAFFIC SAFETY SURVEY IN VANTAA

The characteristics of traffic accidents in Vantaa were studied. Background data of traffic, roads and traffic behaviour were gathered to be used in the analyses. The connection between traffic safety and other effects of traffic were studied in order to clarify objectives for traffic safety work in Vantaa. Also traffic safety objectives used in other cases as well as safety goals in other fields of society were studied on the basis of references. Methods to improve traffic safety were thoroughly discussed. Both land use, traffic policies and various traffic engineering features were included as well as maintenance and speed limits as also police control and education. Also the costs of every method were calculated. Speed limits were in Vantaa the cheapest method to improve traffic safety when the costs are calculated per saved traffic injury. Speed limits have of course negative effects on travel times. The cheapest after speed limits were the humps in intersections. The average costs for minor traffic engineering works were 50000-100000 fmk per saved injury during 10 years. Bigger traffic engineering works usually also include higher costs per saved injury.
