TRAFFIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE PUBLIC. A COMPARISON OF TWO SWEDISH INVESTIGATIONS CARRIED OUT 1973 AND 1976

During spring 1976 an investigation of the traffic knowledge of the Swedish public was carried out. Personal interviews were carried out with a sample of the population aged 15-69. A corresponding investigation was carried out during spring 1973 and a comparison was made in order to study the changes in knowledge. Among people with driving licences the knowledge was found to be unchanged. A small but marked decrease in knowledge was found among people without driving licences. Knowledge has decreased regarding priority rules and, among those with driving licences, concerning road signs. Improvements have been observed among licence-owners concerning braking distance and overtaking. Among non-licence-owners improvements in knowledge of night traffic have been made. As before men have better knowledge than women. The level of knowledge decreases with increasing age and age of driving licence. Driving experience results in better knowledge. Unlike 1973 the knowledge of commercial drivers is not better than other drivers. The questions to licence-owners comprised 20 questions from the theoretical test used in driving licence education. In order to pass this test 17 questions have to be answered correctly. 28% of all licence-owners passed and of those owning licences 3 years or less, 52% passed. (TRRL)
