TOWARDS APPLYING MECHANISTIC PAVEMENT DESIGN IN PRACTICE

This paper was presented at Session 20 - Pavement Design 2. The trend of pavement structural design procedures from empirically-based methods to new methods based on a mechanistic approach and fundamental material properties involves numerous practical problems. The paper describes some of the difficulties that have hindered the practical application of mechanistic methods and the way in which these are being overcome in South Africa. A method which provides an interim solution for the few outstanding problems is presented for practical use. Some indications of future developments are given with an appraisal of how these relate to pavement design, materials testing, construction, and pavement management techniques. /TRRL/
