South east freeway (Brisbane) noise annoyance study: report on the survey

A survey was conducted of people living near a 2 km length of the south east freeway, Brisbane, to examine the effects of freeway traffic noise. The observed magnitude and spatial distribution of residents' noise annoyance, together with the distribution of the effects of traffic noise on household activities, has been reported in brown and law (1976). The present report describes the questionnaire used in the survey and tabulates all survey results not previously reported, including study area social data and housing characteristics. The report examines residents' perception and assessment of traffic noise in the neighbourhood context. Residents' pattern of sleep and absence from the home are reported, indicating their daily exposure to study area noise. This is examined in relation to residents' perception of the daily variation in the noticeability of noise. Responses to a scale used to assess individual susceptibility to noise annoyance are also examined (a).

ANNOYANCE CAUSED BY ROAD TRAFFIC NOISE

This thesis was submitted in the Department of Architecture University of Queensland, for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The present study aimed at measuring the effect on people, in their home environment, of noise emanating from roadway traffic and relating the occurence and magnitude of these effects to the levels of road traffic noise. This has involved the measurement of traffic noise outside of dwellings and surveys of dwelling residents to determine their attitudes and reactions to such noise. Two separate projects are reported here, though both involved the same techniques of noise measurement and of assessment of the effects of noise. The first involved the measurement of twenty-four hour noise levels at 17 sites near the south- East Freeway in Brisbane, and a survey of 285 people living near the freeway. The second involved the measurement of noise levels along 19 roadways in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, and a survey of 818 people in dwellings along these roadways. These study roadways were selected to give a much wider range of noise levels than were measured in the freeway study. In the freeway study, emphasis has been on examination of the spatial distribution of noise effects around the single source roadway. In the Brisbane-Sydney- Melbourne study, most emphasis has been placed on examination of the noise-response relationship. (TRRL)
