SEATBELTS: THE MONITORING OF THE WEARING OF SEATBELTS IN SOUTH AFRICA DURING 1982

The National Institute for Transport and Road Research began monitoring the wearing rates of car front seat occupants by means of a series of annual country wide surveys in 1974. From the data collected during 1982 the combined wearing rates for motor cars and commercial vehicles were observed as 60.6 per cent in February, 51.3 per cent in May, 47.0 per cent in August and 52.7 per cent in November. A significant reduction in the wearing rate during 1982 compared to 1981 is apparent. (Author/TRRL)

SEAT BELTS: MONITORING OF WEARING RATES IN SOUTH AFRICA DURING 1980

The Institute began monitoring the wearing rates of car front seat occupants by means of a series of annual country wide surveys in 1974. From February 1980 the rates have been monitored on a quarterly basis at 75 points country wide. From the data collected the combined wearing rates of motor cars and commercial vehicles were observed as 52.9 per cent in February, 52.4 per cent in May, 48.2 per cent in August and 48.5 per cent in November. As it became mandatory for front seat occupants of commercial vehicles to wear seat belts with effect from 1 January 1979, the Institute prefers to work with the combined wearing rate.
