DIAL-A-RIDE IN HOEOER - EVALUATION OF A TRIAL WITH DEMAND RESPONSE PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN RURAL AREAS

Since June 1991 there is a trial with demand response public transport going on in the rural area round the small village Hoeoer in southern Sweden. The spread out buildings round the village gave a sparsely operated route network with bad area coverge. Former operation consisted of routes operated by bus, special transport by taxi and school bus traffic by bus and taxi. These operations all were replaced by dial-a-ride buses. Dial-a-ride in this project means demand response, non route, public transport with a time table with small buses in eight areas. The aim of this project has been to evaluate the two first years of the trial. The Hoeoer dial-a-ride area are about two times more expensive than the former public transport system. The supply of trips is about 2.2 times higher. The total number of journeys has increased by 70%. Totally 83% of the passengers considered the dial-a-ride better than the former public transport. Many, about 40%, said that they travelled more often by bus since the dial-a-ride came. 13% said that they had not used the public transport before. The trial is looked upon as very successful and has been extended. (A)
