EXTRUDED POLYSTYRENE FOAM IS WELL SUITED AS A FROST BLANKET IN HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION

Yearly 10 km roads in Norway are secured against frost action by the use of extruded polystyrene foam. In the production of this foam freon or methyl chloride is used. The last mentioned material is very poisonous, while freon has come under suspicion, due to the supposed danger caused by effluents from the production process with regard to the earth's layer of ozone. Extruded polystyrene foam is well suited for protecting roads against adverse frost action. For the time being there is no alternative material available. (TRRL)
