CYCLISTS AT ROAD INTERSECTIONS

The subject of this report is to describe a research project launched by the Nordic Traffic Safety Council in four countries. One aim was to treat cyclist safety at road intersections. Ideally the projects should have three phases: (1) an analytical phase where selected intersections should be subject to accident and behavioural studies; (2) a design and reconstruction phase where the results of the analysis should be applied practically; and (3) an evaluation phase where the effects of the reconstruction should be studied. Some of the results from the project are (1) concerning the reconstructed intersections: (a) two-way cycle tracks along urban arterials create safety problems at minor road junctions; (b) sight conditions from cars to intersecting cars are important to the safety of cyclists; and (c) roundabouts do not solve cyclist problems.
