      <title>IMPACT OF RAIL RATIONALIZATION ON TRAFFIC DENSITIES</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Though the question of the interdependence of branch lines and main lines has long been of policy relevance, there is, to date, little evidence on the relationship among light-densiy lines, main lines, and overall system traffic densities.  This paper provides evidence of the impact of eliminating a substantial number of low-density lines, along with the traffic originating and terminating on these lines, on main-line densities.  The relationship between light- and high-density lines is explored using both national and individual railroad line segment density data.  The main finding of the study is that elimination of a large number of light-density lines does not dramatically reduce main-line densities.]]></description>
