HIGH QUALITY CONCRETE - THE CONTRACTOR'S TECHNOLOGY

This paper presents some of the results achieved in the development project HETEK (High-quality concrete: the contractor's technology), which was supported by the Danish Agency for Trade and Industry. This research programme focused on eight factors with a major influence on the final quality and durability of concrete in structures situated in aggressive environments. A theoretical method of estimating chloride penetration was obtained, and engineers' guidelines for this were prepared. Methods for determining frost resistance were investigated, with the aim of comparing function tests with on-site observations; classification systems for the degree of frost damage and for the environment were studied. The formation of cracks in concrete during its hardening process was investigated, and six topics for further study were identified. Research was conducted to determine whether the development of mechanical properties, including autogenous shrinkage, could be described using the well-known 'maturity' concept. Guidelines for casting and poker vibration were assessed. Guidelines for the duration and effectiveness of curing were developed. Guidelines for conducting preliminary tests of concrete properties, execution, and structural details were prepared. Guidelines for repair were obtained.
