FREIGHT TRANSPORT IN SWEDEN - TRENDS, VOLUMES AND LIKELY PATTERNS OF CHANGE

This paper provides a brief overview of the development of goods transport in Sweden since 1950, an overview of the present situation and forecast for future Swedish goods transport. The forecast has been produced jointly by the Swedish Rail Infrastructure Authority, the Swedish National Road Administration, and the Swedish Administration of Shipping and Navigation. The time horizons are the years 2005 and 2020. The forecast for Swedish goods transport presented in the report is based on an economic scenario with very modest growth (+1.5% per year 1990-2005) and a consistent scenario for the structural change in Swedish industry. Important characteristics of the process of structural change are the contraction of agriculture, as well as the food and beverages and clothing industries - a contraction accompanied by a substantial growth in imports of the corresponding products.More than average growth is expected for the chemical industry, as well as the pharmaceuticals, mechanical and electromechanical industries. The traditional Swedish raw material based industries, such as mining, pulp and paper etc., are expected to grow only modestly over the forecasting period. The forecast indicates that road haulage is favoured by the expected changes in industrial structure as well as the expected changes in regional production patterns within Sweden. Rail transport volume is expected to grow only relatively slowly in line with the modest growth of traditional "rail based" industries. However, ton km by rail are still expected to grow almost as much as road haulage ton km, because of longer average transport distances. Transport by sea to and from foreign ports is expected to grow rapidly while inland sea transport, which is heavily dependent on domestic oil transport, would probably decline under the assumptions made.
