      <title>EXPERIENCES WITH AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS OF POROUS ROAD SURFACES</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Porous road surfaces are considered to be among the most effective means of reducing traffic noise and, as a result of continuing study and optimization, large improvements in both the total reduction and the application range of the reducing effect are to be expected in the next years.  The first generation porous surfaces were about 3-4 dB less noisy than dense surfaces with the same grading.  However they were only effective at high speeds.  In the next generation the surface texture and the absorption spectrum were tuned to the noise generating mechanisms resulting in an additional 2 dB reduction at high speed and a 4 dB reduction at low speeds.  Furthermore this type of surface has a very good resistance against clogging.  Application of new road building technology will result in an additional 2 to 3 dB reduction within tighter technical and financial constraints.
