BITUMINOUS PAVEMENT AND MIXTURE. DETERMINATION OF BINDER CONTENT ACCORDING TO THE PIPETTE METHOD

The method described in this report is used when determining the binder content in a bituminous pavement or mixture. This is made by an extraction with dichloromethane. The method is, in principle, intended for samples without any water but it can also be used on samples with a low moisture content. A sample of the pavement or the mixture is weighed in a vessel that can be scaled. After the addition of a fixed volume of dichloromethane the binder is extracted at a low temperature. Thereafter a sample of the cutback bitumen is taken out and centrifuged. A sample, free from filler, is taken out with a pipette and evaporated. With the help of a mathematical model, parameters being the total weight of the sample, the added volume of dichloromethane, the volume of cutback bitumen extracted, the weight of the bitumen obtained and the density of the bitumen, the binder content can be calculated.
BITUMINOUS PAVEMENT AND MIXTURE. DETERMINATION OF BINDER CONTENT BY EXTRACTION IN BORAL APPARATUS

This report presents a method for use in determining binder content, with inclusion of a possible solvent, in a bituminous pavement or mixture. Determination is by extraction with dichloromethane. The test is carried out in the following way: a sample of the pavement or mixture is weighed. The sample is placed in a washing machine and the binder in the sample is extracted by an addition of the solvent dichloromethane. The filler is separated in a centrifuge. The weight of the binder in a sample free from water is obtained when comparing the weight of the sample and the weight of the mineral. (TRRL)
