IMAGE ANALYSIS OF ASPHALT SURFACE

The aim of this study has been to describe the structure of an asphalt surface using image analysis and to document changes which occur due to wear over a period of 4 years in two different aggregate material, porphyry and X-100. Pictures of the asphalt surface have been taken with a digitial camera. These have then been analysed using image analysis system. The study analysed a sequence of detailed pictures taken perpendicular to trend of the road at six different sites, three sites for each of the different aggregate material which were of varying ages. The age difference in the road surface between the sites was used to simulate the effect of wear with time. One of the most important results is that the size of the particles in the asphalt changes with time. The younger road surfaces contained a higher frequency of large particles than the older roads. The time associated with the size change is different for the two different aggregate materials, porphyry and X-100. Another interesting observation is that the particles longest axis display a preferred orientation at an angle of about 20oC-40oC with respect to the trend of the road. This preferred orientation seems to be independent of the age or aggregate type of the road. (A)
