      <title>Assessment of Rutting Behavior of Warm-Mix Asphalt (WMA) with Chemical WMA Additives towards Laboratory and Field Investigation</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Lower production temperature and less aging make warm-mix asphalt (WMA) more prone to rutting. This study assessed rutting characteristics of WMA with chemical additives through laboratory experimentation and non-destructive field evaluation. To facilitate the study, three WMA mixtures and one control hot-mix asphalt (HMA) have been experimented. One of the WMA mixtures contained polymer modified binder. Hamburg wheel tracking (HWT) test has been conducted for laboratory experimentation. A recently developed method of HWT test analysis has been applied. Nondestructive field strength evaluation and automated pavement distress survey tools were utilized for field evaluation. It is found that chemical WMA exhibits equivalent or better rutting behavior compared to a HMA with a same binder and aggregate structure. Incorporation of polymer modifier in chemical WMA additives resulted in improved rutting characteristics and field strength.]]></description>

      <title>Mechanically Supercharged 2.4L GDI Engine for Improved Fuel Economy and Low Speed Torque Improvement</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This paper describes the simulation, design, and testing of a mechanically supercharged 2.4L I-4 gasoline direct injection engine with Miller cycle late intake valve closing and high geometric compression ratio. Engine downspeeding is also achieved through modified transmission gear ratios. A 3.3L naturally-aspirated V6 engine was chosen as the benchmark for comparison. Intended vehicle application is a mid-size passenger car or small/mid-size CUV. The CAE tool GT-Power was used for component selection and air path development. The powertrain simulation model was then exercised to show both improved fuel economy and performance compared to the V6 baseline engine. The design of a bespoke integrated supercharger with magnetic clutch, charge air cooler, and intake manifold was made and procured. A large new software aggregate was ported into an existing production ECU with modified internal circuitry. Volumetric efficiency was calibrated using automated engine mapping techniques and software. Data reduction methods compiled the raw outputs into a point-slope format. A full factorial design of experiments yielded models for the most potent calibration areas. Engine dynamometer results show promising fuel economy improvement under simulated FTP drive cycles. Development for supercharger clutch control and in-vehicle testing is currently in progress.]]></description>

      <title>Evaluation of Automatic Emergency Braking in Helping Prevent Front-to-Rear Crashes Among Toyota Models</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This study estimated the effectiveness of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) in helping prevent front-to-rear collisions among three Toyota models (Avalon, Prius, RAV4). TSS, offered as an option in model year 2016 vehicles, includes a pre-collision warning system with automatic emergency braking (AEB), in addition to lane departure alert and automatic high beam. This study addresses the hypothesis that TSS-equipped vehicles will be less likely to experience a front-to-rear crash (as the striking vehicle) compared to those not equipped with TSS. Using Toyota-supplied production data linked to police reported crash data from 5 US states (Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas) for crash years 2014-2016, the study compared crash rates (crashes per 10,000 vehicle months) of TSS equipped (n= 23,394) versus non-equipped (n= 294,931) vehicles. TSS equipment present per vehicle was identified based on VIN. This study evaluated the impact on front-to-rear crashes where the Toyota was the striking vehicle. Exposure, using vehicle-months, was computed based on aggregate vehicle sales in the five study states for TSS equipped and non-equipped model year 2014 to 2016 vehicles. The crude rate ratio (CRR) of front-to-rear crash rates where the Toyota was the striking vehicle was calculated as the front-to-rear crash rate for TSS-equipped vehicles divided by the crash rate for non-equipped vehicles. Given that TSS is optional, it is possible that customers who choose to purchase these safety systems also exhibit different driving and risk-taking behaviors compared to those who do not purchase the safety systems. To address a possible selection bias, sensitivity analysis examined the control outcome of front-end damage in a multi-vehicle crash, excluding the types of crashes targeted by AEB (front-to-rear). Of the TSS-equipped vehicles, 2.46 per 10,000 vehicle-months (95%CI:1.75-3.17 per 10,000 vehicle-months) experienced a front-to-rear crash as the striking vehicle, compared to 4.55 per 10,000 vehicle-months (95%CI:4.37- 4.73 per 10,000 vehicle-months) of the non-equipped vehicles. Therefore, study Toyotas equipped with TSS were 46% less likely to experience a front-to-rear crash as the striking vehicle compared to non-equipped (CRR=0.54; 95%CI:0.40-0.67). The study found that when the outcome was broadened to include all vehicles with front-end damage in multivehicle crashes, TSS-equipped vehicles experienced 17% fewer crashes than non-equipped vehicles (CRR=0.83; 95%CI:0.71-0.94) . However, no significant difference was observed if front-to-rear crashes were excluded (CRR=1.02; 95%CI:0.86-1.16) suggesting that selection bias did not play a significant role in this study. The TSS option was only available in model year 2016 vehicles, limiting the sample size and follow-up time of TSS-equipped vehicles. Future research that includes additional state data, models and model years, will increase sample sizes and may allow for estimates by model and other crash types. In conclusion, vehicles equipped with TSS, were nearly half as likely to be the striking vehicle in a front-to-rear crash compared to non-equipped vehicles. This study contributes to the growing evidence of the effectiveness of AEB in helping prevent a significant number of front-to-rear crashes.]]></description>

      <title>Size and Shape Determination of Riprap and Large-sized Aggregates Using Field Imaging</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Riprap rock and large-sized aggregates are extensively used in transportation, geotechnical, and hydraulic engineering applications. Traditional methods for assessing riprap categories based on particle weight may involve subjective visual inspection and time-consuming manual measurements. Aggregate imaging and segmentation techniques can efficiently characterize riprap particles for their size and morphological/shape properties to estimate particle weights. Particle size and morphological/shape characterization ensure the reliable and sustainable use of all aggregate skeleton materials at quarry production lines and construction sites. Aggregate imaging systems developed to date for size and shape characterization, however, have primarily focused on measurement of separated or non-overlapping aggregate particles. This research study presents an innovative approach for automated segmentation and morphological analyses of stockpile aggregate images based on deep-learning techniques. As a project outcome, a portable, deployable, and affordable field-imaging system is envisioned to estimate volumes of individual riprap rocks for field evaluation. A state-of-the-art object detection and segmentation framework is used to train an image-segmentation kernel from manually labeled 2D riprap images in order to facilitate automatic and user-independent segmentation of stockpile aggregate images. The segmentation results show good agreement with ground-truth validation, which entailed comparing the manual labeling to the automatically segmented images. A significant improvement to the efficiency of size and morphological analyses conducted on densely stacked and overlapping particle images is achieved. The algorithms are integrated into a software application with a user-friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI) for ease of operation. Based on the findings of this study, this stockpile aggregate image analysis program promises to become an efficient and innovative application for field-scale and in-place evaluations of aggregate materials. The innovative imaging-based system is envisioned to provide convenient, reliable, and sustainable solutions for the on-site quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) tasks related to riprap rock and large-sized aggregate material characterization and classification.]]></description>

      <title>Development of an Automated Remote Asphalt Paving Quality Control System</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The asphalt pavement construction monitoring system presented in this paper covers two main asphalt pavement construction processes: hot mix asphalt (HMA) plant production and the laydown and compaction operation. The main architecture of the monitoring system, the development of the required hardware and the software structure, and the implementation process are presented in this paper. The system is able to perform automatic data collection and data transmission, and can automatically provide feedback to the construction site for real-time asphalt pavement construction quality control. The entire process works automatically without much human intervention and covers the entire project throughout the entire construction period in real time. The monitoring system was successfully implemented in the ZhaoMa Highway construction project in China, where it proved to be effective and reliable. The key asphalt plant production parameters, including asphalt content and aggregate gradation, were improved to a statistically significant level as shown by comparing before and after the monitoring system’s deployment. Statistical analysis between asphalt core density and laydown and compaction monitoring data, collected at 20 locations, indicated that rolling passes were highly correlated with density, whereas finishing rolling temperature and HMA laydown temperature were moderately correlated with density. These results imply that implementation of the monitoring system proposed by this paper could improve asphalt construction procedure quality control and asphalt pavement construction quality.]]></description>

      <title>Prototype Development: Automated and Continuous Aggregate Sampling and Laser Targeting System</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This report presents the activities and results associated with the development of a laser scanning prototype device, referred to as the Sampling and Laser Targeting System (SLT). The SLT provides the potential means to rapidly classify aggregates used in highway construction. This classification process can be employed to:  quantify specific engineering properties; identify and/or quantify the presence and amounts of deleterious materials present; determine whether aggregate types or quality are changing during production; and determine the source material or sources of blended production materials. This project involved the design and fabrication of a prototype SLT, the development of software capable of operating the system and processing, through chemometric modeling, the large quantity of data generated during the scanning process to provide near real-time data turnaround.  It was concluded from these findings that laser scanning in near real-time of aggregate materials is a technology capable of significantly improving the manner in which aggregate quality control procedures are employed by the industry.  The SLT prototype developed during the course of this investigation provides a system capable of processing aggregate samples and can be operated by material technicians with no special training.   The findings also indicate that the development of the technology will require establishing suitable and expanded laser-induced spectral information databases for target aggregates of interest, with sufficient numbers and types of sample to properly characterize the target property.  Improvements in data analytical techniques still being evaluated will further assist in resolving the spectral information generated during the laser scanning process and improving model predictions of aggregate properties.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Les nouvelles technologies permettent aujourd'hui d'associer une production de qualite et des profils industriels.  Les auteurs proposent de mettre  en place, de facon hierarchisee et progressive, des modules permettant l'automatisation totale de petites carrieres.  Ces modules concernent en premier lieu l'alimentation de la carriere en prenant en compte l'heterogeneite du brut d'abattage.  Le deuxieme module concerne la qualite et les reglages optimaux de la carriere.  Le troisieme module concerne la production  du produit fini et la conduite dynamique de la carriere.  Le dernier module enfin s'applique a la gestion de la carriere, mais fait encore l'objet  de recherche au niveau europeen.  Les effets de ces modules sur les gains de production sont estimes et leur retour d'invessement est calcule.       <title>AUTOMATION AND OPTIMIZATION IN THE PRODUCTION OF AGGREGATES</title>

      <description><![CDATA[La automatizacion y la aplicacion de nuevas tecnologias de la informatica a las plantas de produccion de aridos es una necesidad creciente en todo el mundo.  En Europa se esta trabajando desde hace varios anos en la unificacion y normalizacion de las caracteristicas de los aridos en los paises de la CE.  Esto llevara consigo una rigurosa exigencia en las calidades de los aridos que se produzcan en las instalaciones de machaqueo.  Por otra parte, la industria de la fabricacion de aridos tiene una considerable importancia economica en los paises industrializados o en vias de desarrollo.  Esta importancia economica no se ve reflejada en la tecnificacion de este sector que en muchas ocasiones todavia trabaja con metodos anticuados y rutinarios.  La Comunidad Economica, consciente de estas carencias aprobo la inclusion del proyecto PETRUS en el programa de investigacion y desarrollo BRITE EURAM.
