Escalating temperatures associated to global warming will increase the use of air-conditioning (AC) in heavy-duty trucks, further raising their fuel consumption and emissions. Thus, sustainable solutions are needed to reduce the thermal loads affecting the truck cabins, to minimize the need for AC and decrease the sector’s costs and environmental footprint. The authors assessed the economic and environmental impact of AC use in the European heavy-duty transportation fleet, for realistic environmental conditions throughout the year, across the different European regions. Potential reductions were estimated for various changes in the optical properties of the cabin external paints and glazing elements (windshield and side-windows). The use of high-reflectivity paints in the cabin external surfaces and low-transmissivity glazing can reduce fuel costs by ≈€195 million/year across Europe (i.e., ≈0.1% of the total fuel costs of the European heavy-duty fleet), and decrease CO2 emissions by 1% of the reduction target set for 2025. These potential reductions highlight the importance of engaging with transportation stakeholders (e.g., workers unions, vehicle manufacturers, policymakers, and regulating bodies), to raise awareness about the potential benefits for the European transportation sector and the environment, and to promote the necessary adaptation in the transportation fleets.]]> Wed, 20 Dec 2023 15:43:05 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/2189312 Solution for a two-year renewal cycle of structured road markings https://trid.trb.org/View/1849293 Thu, 24 Jun 2021 16:43:00 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/1849293 Smart Roads https://trid.trb.org/View/1367869 Fri, 25 Sep 2015 16:28:25 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/1367869 Comparison of the Retroflective Durability of Rumble Stripes and Painted Lines https://trid.trb.org/View/1251119 Tue, 28 May 2013 09:36:37 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/1251119 Development of Recessed Pavement Markings That Incorporate Rumble Strips https://trid.trb.org/View/1104176 Tue, 21 Jun 2011 09:28:13 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/1104176 Impact of Bead Density on Paint Pavement Marking Retroreflectivity https://trid.trb.org/View/925209 Mon, 23 Aug 2010 08:31:04 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/925209 Human Factors Evaluation of Design Ideas for Prevention of Vehicle Entrapment on Railroad Tracks Due to Improper Left Turns https://trid.trb.org/View/786329 Mon, 17 Jul 2006 15:46:38 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/786329 GLASS BEADS "POP OUT" https://trid.trb.org/View/704659 Tue, 13 Jul 2004 00:00:00 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/704659 SAFER WINTER MAINTENANCE https://trid.trb.org/View/687321 Tue, 03 Feb 2004 00:00:00 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/687321 PAVEMENT MARKING MATERIALS: A SUMMARY OF NEW YORK STATE RESEARCH https://trid.trb.org/View/50566 Mon, 13 Oct 2003 00:00:00 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/50566 TESTING OF SELECTED BEADS FOR TRAFFIC PAINTS https://trid.trb.org/View/64865 Sun, 27 Apr 2003 00:00:00 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/64865 MARKING THE WAY AHEAD https://trid.trb.org/View/684253 Sun, 20 May 2001 00:00:00 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/684253 PERCEPTUAL COUNTERMEASURES: EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH https://trid.trb.org/View/651842 Tue, 18 Apr 2000 00:00:00 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/651842 PAINT STRIPE AND GLASS BEAD STUDY: GLASS BEADS IN PAINT https://trid.trb.org/View/502540 Tue, 13 Jul 1999 00:00:00 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/502540 PHOTOMETER FOR MEASUREMENT OF REFLEX-REFLECTIVE SIGN MATERIALS https://trid.trb.org/View/110251 Fri, 16 Dec 1994 00:00:00 GMT https://trid.trb.org/View/110251
