A solvent free synthesis of alkyl-quat-primer polymers was developed and a technique was found to exfoliate sodium-montmorillonite and to coat the obtained silicate-layers with these polymers in a single step. Polyethylenimin based hyperbranched polymers with a degree of quarternization of 5 mol%, and a degree of alkylation of 80 mol% on using C12- substituents irreversibly adsorb on montmorillonite and act as dispersing agent. Nano-Bitumen-binders were prepared that contained up to 10 wt% of nanoparticles with a thickness of about 10-50 nm and diameters of 1-10 μm. To generate a demonstrator the syntheses were upscaled to the semi technicum level (11 kg polymer - 22 kg modified nanoparticles - 440 kg Nano-Bitumen - 6.200 kg Nano-Asphalt). The mixing of the nanoparticles into the bitumen was carried out by applying a screw extruder, which was also used in the pilot study, and with a view to a later upscaling of the production process by means of a high-speed shear-mixer. The resulting NPBKs were evaluated in different aging stages (fresh, short- and long-term-aged) by means of conventional and rheological tests procedures. Selected NPBK-variants were used for producing asphalt mixtures on laboratory level, which were subjected to an extensive test program. At the end of the project a large-scale mixed material production in an asphalt mixing plant was realized, followed by the installation and testing of a paving demonstrator area.
