      <title>PROCESSING AND SYNTHESIS OF IMAGES FROM GEOMETRIC DATA</title>

      <description><![CDATA[In this two-part study, the authors develop descriptive tools for extracting the highway system from a vector-type planimetric data base.  To that end, they study the data recovery, graphic semiology, and data structure that derive from it.  They then analyze and correct the data in order to extract the topology and geometry from information on the highway system contained in an urban data bank (St. Etienne).  They present two extraction methods.  The second part of the study deals with visualization of urban space through computation of synthesis images.  It includes:  an in-depth study of the PS390 graphics system of Evans & Sutherland, its functioning and very specific programming language;  and an analysis of the authors' research, which enables interactive production of animated films from urban space (TRAPU) data bank.]]></description>

      <title>A DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR TRAFFIC ENGINEERING DEPARTMENTS OF SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED CITIES</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Most traffic information systems now in use are inadequate. The data they contain are often inaccessible, incompatible with other databases, and rarely up to date.  Furthermore, the data are rarely fully exploited because they are usually in manual form.  The proposed system attempts to solve these problems.  It is a database management system based on dBASE III PLUS that includes an integrated urban data bank and three types of software for information systems management, information retrieval, and interfaces with application programs.  A sector of the city of Quebec was used to test the feasibility of the system.  Although limited, the use of the data shows that the proposed system has distinct advantages over existing approaches.  The system will become even more attractive as cheaper, more powerful, and more versatile microcomputers enter the market.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[AN INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEM IS BEING DEVELOPED FOR THE CITY OF VANCOUVER UTILIZING ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING EQUIPMENT. THE SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED AS AN URBAN DATA BANK SUITABLE FOR THE REQUIREMENTS OF ALL CITY DEPARTMENTS. DATA MAY BE STORED BY GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION ON SUCH INFORMATION AS ORIGIN AND DESTINATION OF TRIPS, POPULATION, ASSESSMENT, INCOME, ACCIDENTS, FLOOR SPACE, TAXATION, SERVICES, LICENSING AND LAND USE. IN THE IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM DEVELOPED, THE STREETS THEMSELVES ARE ASSIGNED COORDINATE NUMBERS THAT FOLLOW THE CONFIGURATION OF THE STREETS EVEN WHEN NON-LINEAR. THUS THE COORDINATES DO NOT REFLECT DISTANCE BUT IDENTIFY STREET CONFIGURATION AND ROUTES. SIX DIGITS ARE ADEQUATE TO IDENTIFY EACH OF THE 10,000 BLOCKS IN THE CITY. INDIVIDUAL PROPERTIES OR INCREMENTS OF A STREET SECTION CAN BE IDENTIFIED BY ADDING TWO DIGITS TO THE BASIC CODE. THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN USED FOR INVENTORIES, PRIORITIES AND CONTROL OF PAVEMENT AND SIDEWALK MAINTENANCE AND FOR ANALYSIS INVOLVING THE RESCHEDULING OF REFUSE COLLECTION ROUTES. VARIOUS TRAFFIC ANALYSIS PROGRAMS ARE NOW BEING DESIGNED.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[A quick reference compilation of certain population, socio-economic, employment, and modal split characteristics of the 35 largest Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSA) in the United States is presented. The three basic groups or urban data presented are population, socio-economic, and employment. The population data include population totals and densities for the various segments of each of the individual SMSA's (CBD, Central City, Urbanized Area, and SMSA). Also included are population totals by concentric urban rings and population density plots (dot, contour, and isometric views). The urban ring data combined with the population density plots can be used for identifying existing urban corridors. The socio-economic data compiled by concentric urban rings include: median female and male age, proportion of population 65 years and older, median family income, number of households and families, number of home-owners and renters, average home value and average rent paid, and auto ownership. The employment data found in this report include: home-to-work flows, employment and worker densities, and a modal split distribution for each of the 35 SMSA's.]]></description>
