      <description><![CDATA[The purpose of the Lightning Protection Study is to determine the degree of susceptability of FAA electronic systems to induced electromagnetic pulse effects due to lightning and to propose protective devices adequate for low voltage solid state systems. This Report covers the RCAG. While the RCAG does contain solid state circuitry with potentially susceptible components, they are sufficiently isolated from transients so that effects are apparently negligible. Two separate reviews of four RCAG's in Florida failed to surface any outages directly attributable to lightning induced transients on control lines. (Author)]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[A state-of-the-art review and background research reveals and a significant divergence of opinion as to the prefered techniques of grounding of electronic equipments and systems. There exists an absence of agreement on a unified approach to grounding which is applicable to all frequency ranges and signal types. The System Research and Development Service of the Federal Aviation Administration in conjunction with the Georgia Institute of Technilogy conducted a workshop which brought together distinguished experts in the field of grounding as related to EMI/EMC and lightning. This report contains the papers presented at the workshop.]]></description>

      <title>FAA LIGHTNING PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS FOR MARK III INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEM (CATEGORY III)</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The withstand capabilities and protection requirements for solid state circuits of the Mark III Instrument Landing System (Cat. III) susceptible to lightning-induced transients on buried control cables are presented. Susceptible circuits and components were identified from the wiring diagrams as transistors, diodes, relay contacts, and electrolytic capacitors. Withstand capabilities of each circuit were determined analytically and experimentally using manufacturer's data and a 1000-volt, 10 x 1000 microsec test waveform. Avalanche diode surge protectors and series resistance are recommended to protect susceptible circuits from lightning-induced transients on buried control cable conductors connected to the circuits.]]></description>
