DIAMOND-SAW SURGERY FOR UNDERMINED OVERBRIDGE

The author describes the use of hydraulic-powered, wall mounted diamond saws to cut through an M1 overbridge in Derbyshire, threatened by subsidence from mineworkings below. A detailed description is given of the operation which involves increasing the clearance between the bridge's abutments and columns at either end from 75 mm to 230 mm by taking a vertical slice out of the parapets, duct covers, deckslab and abutments. The advantages of the method chosen are outlined and include the resulting clean edge and relatively low cost. /TRRL/
