      <title>DEEP-SEA TRADE AND TRANSPORTATION OF FOREST PRODUCTS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The Study begins with a presentation of the most up-to-date statistics on world production and trade of all types of forest product commodity.  Whatever the product mix, the observed tendency on all deep-sea trades has been for larger, specialised bulk carriers to be introduced, superseding older, smaller bulkers and "tweendeckers as soon as trade volumes have made this feasible.  Inadequate port facilities have, however, tended to hold back vessel development, particularly with regard to exports from the Third World.  Two specialised vessel types are considered, the bulk lumber carrier and the wood-chip carrier, and then an assessment is made of the potential development of ro-ro shipping for forest products traffic.  After examining the organisation of seaborne trade in forest products by looking at the marketing and chartering operations and the established bulk pools and consortia, the study also reviews recent developments in handling systems currently employed. The study concludes by looking at prospects for the deep-sea forest product trades with various factors expected to exert an influence in the near future.  The substantial cost advantages that North American producers presently hold over their scandinavian rivals may well alter the shape of transatlantic trade.  Finally, throughout the developing world, forest areas are becoming severely depleted and necessary conservation plans may evantually result in restrictions on hardwood exports from these regions.]]></description>

      <title>WHY LASH MAKES ECONOMIC SENSE</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Barges with wide hatches are excellent for forest products which, with the added facility of being able to load at the mill and sometimes to discharge at the destination, means less transit damage.  It is not necessary to load and discharge at high speeds, and deep water facilities are not required.  The barges are well suited to other products. So, summarizing, the LASH vessel can hopefully, because of its size, give us some economies without penalties.  It is a completely flexible system.]]></description>
