      <title>COATINGS OF WATER BALLAST TANKS OF LNG TANKERS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The efficiency of the protection against seawater corrosion of the sea water ballast tanks of ships and, in particular, of LNG tankers (but also of the new type of double hull VLCC) is recognized as a key factor which determines their life span.  The parameters which determine a successful protection are: dry film thickness, stripe coats, surveys and good conditions during the application work.  This paper shows how these parameters are "built" by the two traditional techniques of the treatment of water ballast tanks used by the shipyards ie at the prefabrication stage on panels or blocks, or in situ after the ship erection.  The advantages and drawbacks regarding schedules and quality of these 2 techniques are discussed.  Finally, the specification air conditioning, surface preparation and paint application process selected by a French shipyard are outlined.]]></description>

      <title>COATINGS WITH AND WITHOUT CATHODIC PROTECTION IN SALT WATER BALLAST TANKS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This project evaluates the technical feasibility of using a combination of cathodic protection and partial coatings in lieu of completely coating ship ballast tanks with high-performance coatings.  The originally approved test program evaluated four corrosion control alternatives.  After three years of testing, an additional technique was added.  The corrosion control techniques tested include; i) ballast tanks completely coated with high-performance coatings (baseline); ii) ballast tanks partially coated with high-performance coatings plus cathodic protection; iii) ballast tanks completely coated with soft coatings plus cathodic protection; iv) ballast tanks preconstruction primed plus cathodic protection; and v) ballast tanks coated with a rust-tolerant epoxy coating.  Both aluminium and zinc sacrificial anode systems were evaluated.  To test the proposed alternatives, actual mock-up test tanks were constructed that duplicated ship ballast tank configurations.  These tanks were then ballasted and deballasted for five years.  At the end of each year, each alternative was graded.]]></description>
