      <title>Global Intermodal Tank Container Management for the Chemical Industry</title>

      <description><![CDATA[International logistics is crucial to the high-value chemicals industry, since raw materials sources, production facilities, and consumer markets are distributed globally. Fluctuating demand, imbalanced trade flows, and expensive transportation equipment necessitate dynamic asset management. This paper focuses on asset management problems faced by tank container operators.  An operational tank container management problem is formulated as a large-scale multi-commodity flow problem on a time-discretized network. By integrating container routing and repositioning decisions in a single model, total operating costs and fleet sizes can be reduced.  Results from a computational study verify this hypothesis.  Extensions to the model and additional related research topics are discussed.]]></description>

      <title>COMPLETE 2D AND FULLY NONLINEAR ANALYSIS OF IDEAL FLUID IN TANKS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[A two-dimensional rectangular tank with rigid walls is used as the example for presenting the concepts of fully nonlinear and complete dimensional analysis.  The container is subjected to simultaneous action of horizontal and vertical ground accelerations.  The fluid is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible, and the flow is irrotational.  The Euler equations as well as the nonlinear, kinematic free-surface boundary condition are used in the analysis.  A time-independent finite difference method is used to evaluate the velocity fields and the surface profile of the sloshing fluid.  The significance of the nonlinear effect on hydrodynamic force on tank face is studied.  The comparison of numerical results evaluated by the complete two-dimensional analysis and the linear superposition (invalid when high nonlinearity is presented) of results evaluated by separated ground exciting is made.  Details of the characteristics of nonlinear sloshing as well as of the beating phenomena are described.  The occurrence of resonance is also studied.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Increased safety in the transportation of hazardous materials is the anticipated outcome of federal regulations on continuing qualification and maintenance of railcars which will be in force as early as 1998, according to the Federal Railroad Administration.  The regulations cover the maintenance and inspection of railroad tank cars.  As the railcar industry gears up to comply with the regulations, some concerns have been raised by tank car owners, shippers and lining manufacturers over the determination of inspection intervals for lined tanks, the qualification of inspection personnel and available inspection techniques.  This article describes the tank car regulations as they address the inspection of linings in tank cars and the qualifications of inspectors.  Responses from the linings and transportation industries will also be presented.]]></description>
