      <title>Development of toxicity assessment method for bus interior materials</title>

      <description><![CDATA[In recent years, fire safety requirements for bus interior materials have been increased and introduced into international regulations. Fire safety requirements for the burning rate, melting and dripping behaviour of interior materials already exist for many years. However, it remains unclear to what extent the release of smoke, combustion products and their toxicity should be limited. Therefore, a research and development project 82.0723 funded by BASt (Federal Highway Research Institute) was initiated to develop a simplified procedure for testing the toxicity and smoke development in case of fire of interior materials used in buses. The scope of the research included calculations to assess the toxicity of fire gases and the derivation of specifications for the formation of practicable limit values for smoke toxicity. Further investigations are needed to derive these limit values for smoke toxicity in order to be applicable for real fire scenarios in buses.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[THIS PROJECT CONCERNS CONTINUED INVESTIGATIONS REGARDING THE USE OF WOVEN  FABRICS FOR EARTHWORKS, IN SELECTED FILLS AND FOR DRAINAGE. THE OBJECTIVES FOR THE STUDIES UNDERTAKEN DURING PREVIOUS YEARS WERE TO DETERMINE: - THE MECHANICAL RESISTANCE, AS NORMALLY DEFINED IN THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY, OF AVAILABLE MATERIALS; - THE MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MATERIALS AS DETERMINED USING PROCEDURES AND EQUIPMENT SPECIALLY DEVELOPED FOR THE PURPOSE; - THE FILTERING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MATERIALS. FULL SCALE TESTS HAVE SHOWN THAT WOVEN FABRICS CANNOT MAKE ANY STRUCTURAL CONTRIBUTION IN SELECTED FILLS BUT THEY CAN, ON THE OTHER HAND, PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE WITH REGARD TO DRAINAGE. IN 1976 IT IS PROPOSED TO: - CONTINUE TESTS WITH A VIEW  TO IDENTIFYING AND DRAWING UP STANDARDS FOR THE MATERIALS (STRENGTH, CREEP CHARACTERISTICS, FILTERING PROPERTIES); CONSTRUCT AN EXPERIMENTAL EMBANKMENT INCLUDING LAYERS OF WOVEN MATERIALS WITH A VIEW TO DETERMINING THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE MATERIALS WITH REGARD TO DRAINAGE.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[(1) IT IS PROPOSED TO STUDY THE EVOLUTION OF TEXTILES USED IN VARIOUS CIVIL ENGINEERING STRUCTURES, ESPECIALLY IN EARTHWORKS AND DRAINAGE STRUCTURES.  THE EVOLUTION WILL BE EVALUATED AS REGARDS THE MECHANICAL AND PHYSICAL  PERFORMANCE OF TEXTILE MATERIALS AND AS REGARDS THE PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FIBRES.  IT IS ALSO PROPOSED TO STUDY DEVICES FOR CONDUCTING TWO-DIRECTIONAL TENSILE TESTS ON TEXTILE MATERIALS AND MESHES.  (2) THE  MECHANICAL AND PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF TEXTILES AND ESPECIALLY NON-WOVEN MATERIALS ARE KNOWN AT THE INITIAL STAGE, BUT THEIR TIME-RELATED EVOLUTION IN LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ARE NOT SO WELL KNOWN.  A SURVEY CARRIED OUT IN 1978 AMONG THE NETWORK OF REGIONAL LABORATORIES COVERED 60 STRUCTURES FROM WHICH SAMPLING OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF TEXTILE CAN BE TAKEN.  (3) TEXTILE SAMPLING WOULD BE CARRIED OUT ON A NUMBER OF SELECTED STRUCTURES.  A STUDY WILL BE MADE OF THE GEOTECHNICAL, PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CONDITIONS OF THE TEXTILE ENVIRONMENT.  MECHANICAL AND PHYSICAL TESTS (STRENGTH, PERMEABILITY, POROSITY, POLLUTION) WILL BE UNDERTAKEN ON THESE TEXTILE SAMPLES.  PHYSICO-CHEMICAL TESTS ON FIBRES WILL BE CONDUCTED BY THE INSTITUT TEXTILE DE FRANCE.  A TENSILE TEST DEVICE FOR TEXTILES AND MESHES BASED DEVELOPED, AND AN INVESTIGATION WILL BE MADE INTO THE POSSIBILITY OF USING THE TWO-DIRECTIONAL TENSILE DEVICE OF THE INSA IN TOULOUSE.]]></description>
