ORE QUESTION D 150. APPRAISAL OF MEASURING TECHNIQUES. THE RAIL VIBRATION METHOD

This report summarises the results of laboratory and field tests of the rail vibration method for non-destructive determination of longitudinal rail force which were performed by PKP, AAR (Association of American Railroads), BR and LT, with respect to the different approaches used. The between-rail dynamic response and longitudinal force was not sufficient to form the basis of a measuring technique. Due to the lack of theoretical background, which appeared to be essential for establishing a correlation between the measured rail dynamic response and longitudinal force to be determined, it is proposed to abandon the further investigation of this method within the ORE scope.

DEVELOPMENT OF APPARATUS FOR MEASURING THE LONGITUDINAL FORCES IN RAILS LAID IN THE TRACK. PRELIMINARY SELECTION OF TECHNIQUES FOR DETERMINING LONGITUDINAL RAIL FORCES

This report gives the results of the assessment of the techniques for determining longitudinal rail forces. On the basis of both the theoretical and the experimental studies carried out by the Committee the conclusions and recommendations for subsequent development of these techniques are drawn up. Three methods are proposed for further development: magnetic parameters method; Magneto-mechanical acoustic emission; and rail flexural response.
