ROLLER BEARING AXLEBOXES-PASSAGE OF ELECTRIC CURRENT THROUGH AXLE ROLLER BEARINGS

One organization found a large number of axle roller bearings damaged by grooves which were formed on both the rollers and the inner ring. The damage was subsequently found to be due to the passage of electric current which flows from the locomotive down the main heating lead through the heaters and then across the roller bearings on its way to the rails and back to the locomotive. Quite small currents can cause this damage particularly if the grease used has unfavorable electrical properties. The only reliable solution is to fit flexible copper connections between the coach body and truck and at least one sliding contact which connects the truck electrically to the wheelset and thereby provides a low resistance circuit so that the bearings are effectively shunted.

ROLLER BEARING AXLEBOXES AND AXLES. TERMINOLOGY AND CATALOGUE OF DAMAGES. POSITION OF OTHER STUDIES IN PROGRESS

On the basis of the data furnished by the Administrations on the various types of damage liable to affect roller bearing axle-boxes, it has appeared necessary to elaborate a standardized terminology of their constituent components and a common definition of these types of damage. The former aim is fulfilled by this report. The statistical data henceforth to be furnished by the Administrations can then be used for the determination of the studies to be undertaken on the maintenance or on the choice of roller bearing axle-boxes. Without awaiting the results of the pertinent enquiry, a study was undertaken in order to determine a criterion for evaluating the quality of the grease used for axle-boxes in operation. Already, at this stage it has become clear that a measurement of the iron content does not furnish a criterion enabling the condition of the bearings of an axle-box to be determined with an adequate degree of precision and the research has therefore been aimed at a more complete test on an SKF R2F testing bench. The report finally indicates the first stage of the study undertaken on the maintenance rules through a detailed analysis of the rules at present applied by the Administrations, their motives, the studies and tests conducted, either in progress or visualized.

ROLLER BEARING AXLEBOXES - REPORT OF ENQUIRY

All the railway administrations are using, to a varying extent, roller bearing axleboxes. This report of enquiry gives a survey of the various techniques applied, the different conceptions concerning the maintenance of these axleboxes and the problems regarding the cleaning, storing and stabling to which the bearings give rise.

ROLLER BEARING AXLEBOXES AND AXLES. RECOMMENDATIONS CONCERNING THE SELECTION AND CONDITIONS FOR THE OFFICIAL TESTING AND ACCEPTANCE OF GREASES INTENDED FOR THE LUBRICATION OF ROLLER BEARING AXLEBOXES OF RAILWAY VEHICLES

The present report brings up-to-date the conclusions of 1964 of ORE Committee E 18 d concerning the methods for assessing roller bearing axlebox greases in taking into account the increase in distances run, loads and in speeds as well as the lengthening of the overhaul intervals. Following numerous enquiries, the ORE B 95 Committed has formulated recommendations concerning the choice of properties of greases intended for axleboxes of all vehicles running at speeds equal to or lower than 160 km/h, the conditions for the official testing and acceptance of these greases, the storing of greases and the refilling of axleboxes. A grease satisfying the official testing and acceptance conditions defined in this report permits, in the case of wagons, a control-check of axleboxes with renewal of greases, at intervals of 8 to 10 years.

ROLLER BEARING AXLEBOXES AND AXLES. RECOMMENDATIONS CONCERNING THE MAINTENANCE RULES AND FREQUENCIES FOR ROLLER BEARING AXLEBOXES OF GOODS WAGONS

Following an enquiry conducted on the different Member-Administrations of ORE concerning the maintenance rules and maintenance frequencies for roller bearing axleboxes of goods wagons, the ORE B95 Committee considered it possible to present some uniform proposals concerning the question of maintenance. Taking into account the results of the investigations and tests carried out especially concerning greases, the Committee proposes that, subject to certain conditions, the periodical maintenance of roller bearing axleboxes should only be carried out during every other wagon overhaul i.e. at intervals of at least 8 years for current types of wagons. These proposals offer, for the greater part of the Railway Administrations, the advantage of achieving substantial savings without harming the quality of the service or the operational safety of the goods traffic.
