      <title>EVALUATION OF PRECOMPACTION SCREED AND JOINT MAKER</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The primary objective of this evaluation is to determine the effectiveness of the Joint Maker and Precompaction Screed, both developed by TransTech Systems, Inc., in achieving higher and more uniform density across the mat of a rehabilitated Hot Mix Asphalt pavement by increasing the density in the problem areas. The problem areas consist of the rutted areas and the longitudinal joint edges.  TransTech Systems, Inc., has developed these two attachments for the benefit of doing a single rehabilitation overlay without requiring preparatory work to the problem areas.  The major advantage would be derived from not having to cold mill or preliminarily level the existing rutted areas prior to the surface overlay.  This would ultimately reduce project costs.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Depending on the state of geological disintegration, rockfill material shows different mechanical behaviour. After a quantitative description of relevent identification factors of disintegration and decomposition of rock material (example used is granite), the influence of pre-compaction is discussed.  The use of dynamic breakdown compacted rockfill samples is recommended.  The corresponding techniques are pointed out.  Extensive test series on dynamic compacted "realistic" samples were carried out. Results of oedometric and triaxial compression tests are shown with special reference to the influence of the extent of geological disintegration on material behaviour. In embankment engineering, a further theme is the influence of water saturation on the mechanical behaviour of such construction materials.       <title>THE WIRTGEN REPAVING MACHINE BELONGING TO THE JEAN LEFEBVRE FIRM OPERATING ON THE PARIS RING ROAD</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Relatively compact, the Wirtgen Machine for flexible pavement carries out with a single installation levelling and resurfacing operations; these operations are: (1) heating of the existing wearing course by infra red methods without destroying the properties of the bituminous mixtures; (2) decompaction and transversal and longitudinal levelling of the upper part of the wearing course; (3) heating of the levelled support; (4) addition of small quantities (30 to 50 kg/m2) of new bituminous mixture; (5) precompaction of the repaired carpet.  A conventional compaction plant behind the machine ensures the final laying and completes the renewed carpet.  Details are given of the structure of the pavement on the ring road section studied and the repair work carried out at night (2, 3 and 4 November 1976) along zones where tracking reached a depth of 10 cm.  Daily traffic flow per carriageway, and comparison with traffic in Paris and the overall traffic in France are mentioned.  /TRRL/]]></description>

      <title>ALCOHOL-INDUCED CHANGES IN CONTRAST SENSITIVITY FOLLOWING HIGH-INTENSITY LIGHT EXPOSURE</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Relatively low doses of alcohol produced large, significant, dose-related increases in the time required to recover foveal contrast sensitivity following bright light exposure. Nine subjects participated in a double-blind experiment involving three dose levels of alcohol (including placebo). The luminance parameters of the test were comparable to those encountered in practical situations such as driving. The alcohol-induced delay in glare recovery is probably retinal and lasts for several hours after drinking. /Author/]]></description>

      <title>BRIEF INVESTIGATION OF THE COMPACTION PARAMETERS OF A SATURATED CLAY</title>

      <description><![CDATA[THE COMPRESSIBILITY CHARACTERISTICS OF A SATURATED CLAY WERE INVESTIGATED BY UNIXIAL COMPRESSION TESTS AT A FIXED DEFORMATION RATE. AN ESTIMATE OF THE LOGARITHM OF THE VOIDS INDEX CURVE WAS DERIVED FROM MEASURES OF COMPRESSION, THE TOTAL LOAD APPLIED, AND THE NEUTRAL PRESSURE OF THE SAMPLE BASE. THESE CURVES WERE COMPARED WITH ONES OBTAINED FROM CONVENTIONAL TESTS AND PROVED TO BE OF IDENTICAL FORM BUT SHIFTED TO THE LEFT OF THE LATTER. THE RESULTING COMPRESSION INDEX AND THE MINIMUM PRECOMPACTION PRESSURE EXHIBIT A DISCREPANCY OF ABOUT 20% FROM THE CONVENTIONAL TESTS. /RRI/]]></description>
