Superplasticizing admixtures in high strength concrete

This paper presents the results of a comprehensive investigation into the effects of the superplasticizing admixture melment l10 on a range of structural concretes. The principal aim in designing the mixes was to achieve a slump of 70 mm for both plain and superplasticized concretes, and thus all comparisons are made between concretes of similar practical workability levels. The effects of superplasticizer dosage rate, cement content and type of cement on the properties of both the plastic concrete and hardened concrete are presented in some detail. The laboratory steam curing experiments and field trials using a variety of concrete mixing and curing techniques have allowed us to assess the potential and problems of using superplasticizing admixtures in the precast industry (a).

Strength evaluation of incompletely consolidated conventional and superplasticised concrete from combined non destructive tests

With the development of 'superplasticisers' or 'long range water reducing admixtures' new types of concrete, virtually of fluid consistency have been introduced to the Australian building and road making industries. At slumps of between 200 and 240 mm, these concretes are almost self levelling and some of the users were of the impression that superplasticised concretes require no compaction at all. Published research offered little to contradict or support this attitude. In order to fill this gap, a pilot study has been carried out by the authors, with the main objective to provide some guidance for the necessity of 'in situ' compaction of superplasticised concrete. In addition, the effect of inadequate consolidation on the strength prediction from combined non destructive test, previously developed and reported for conventional concretes, was also assessed.

A note on the compressive strengths of concretes having different constituents

Concrete of a required strength and slump can be achieved in many ways. This is partly due to the differences in the properties of cement and the use of admixtures. This paper discusses these constituents in regard to the cement requirement, water demand and strength development of concrete. Results indicate that some high strength concrete can be effectively made only with the incorporation of admixtures. Furthermore, with certain cement and chemical admixtures, concrete containing a particular fly ash can develop similar early strengths to other concretes without fly ash (a).
