      <title>THE MEASUREMENT AND ASSESSMENT OF NOISE</title>

      <description><![CDATA[In this introduction to the subject of noise and its assessment, the author (of Dawe Instruments Ltd) first discusses in general terms the potential effects of excessive noise on personnel in shipbuilding and other industries and on ship's crews, and briefly explains the relevant responsibilities of employers.  Some general information is then given on the nature of noise, and on the distinction between impulsive noises and more or less continuous noises.  The dB(A) unit of sound-level, and the Leq, which is used to indicate the single equivalent dB(A) value over a period of time, are both explained.  Noise criteria and hearing protection are discussed, and the essentials of sound-level meters and Leq meters and their application are examined.  The relevance of these matters to noise analysis and noise insulation in ships is briefly considered, and the advisability of assessing potential noise problems at the design stage is mentioned.       <title>NOISE CONTROL PROGRAM IN SHIP-BUILDING INDUSTRY</title>

      <description><![CDATA[In a previous investigation the noise situation at the Arendal shipyard in Sweden was mapped.  In conjunction with this, the hearing ability of the exposed workers was tested by tone audiometry.  The results indicated that noise induced hearing loss was common.  Only 42% of those investigated had normal hearing.  A careful comparison between these results and the hearing-damage hazard under exposure of continuous noise according to ISO R1999 indicated that shipyard noise, with its superimposed impulses, is more harmful.  To prevent further deterioration of the hearing ability among the exposed employees a noise control program was designed.  This program includes an attempt to reduce noise exposure by technical measures and also a hearing conservation program with periodical hearing tests.]]></description>
