The SANTA MARIA is the first of four Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG 7) type frigates built under license in Spain. The most important feature of the new vessel is the Nettunel electronic warfare (EW) system of which an outline is given. Other features distinguishing the ship from her American counterparts are briefly described. In particular, the SANTA MARIA's weapons systems have been modified feom the US design to the indigenously-built RAN-12 L/X search radar and associated Meroka 20mm CIWS turret.

ORDERS FOR LARGEST SES WILL GO TO NORWEGIAN YARD SOON

The world's largest high-speed surface effect ships (SES), and the first of their kind to carry both cars and passengers, are due to be ordered from a Norwegian yard this autumn. Covering two vessels for Tonsberg shipping company Fekete this contract will mark a fresh success for SES specialist Brodrene As and Bergen-based design company Cirrus. The SANTA MARIA represents the latest in a series of high-speed surface effect ships (SES) delivered to the Fekete shipping company of Norway by the Brodrene Aa/Cirrus partnership. Able to carry 330 people at a regular speed of 45 knots, the SANTA MARIA has a deadweight of 32 tonnes. The catamaran design based on two semi-symmetrical hulls is supplemented by a lift-fan system which delivers air at a predesigned pressure to the area between the hulls. Causing the latter to lift in the water, this pressurised air cushion is sealed between the hulls fore and aft by a flexible skirt system. Propulsion is provided by a two MWM TBD 640B V16 turbocharged and intercooled four-stroke engines providing maximum continuous power of 2,285bhp at 1,800rpm. This system in turn drives two type 56/562 KaMeWa water jets. Principal particulars are: length oa 35.25m; beam 11.5m; depth 3.5m; draught on cushion stationary 0.7m.
